Getting started at COCC is easy! Just follow the steps below and you’ll be on the path to a great education! See more information opportunities on getting started/admission Q&A/tours (pdf).
Step One: Apply to COCC!
All new students (including transfer or those returning after a one-year or more absence) are required to complete a COCC application for admission. The earlier you submit your application, the earlier you’ll be able to register for classes. Note that all new students (those who have NEVER taken credit classes at COCC), must pay a $25 application fee, due at the time of application; applications will not be processed without this fee.
Note for transfer students: Submit copies of your other institution’s transcripts and request a transcript evaluation as soon as possible, preferably at least two weeks before your advising appointment.
Step Two: Placement Testing
The ASSET Placement Test is required for all students taking credit classes (see exemptions below). The goal of this test is to measure a student's current skill levels in reading, writing and math in order to select the most appropriate level of courses. Note that placement testing takes approximately 2 hours and reservations are required. Students with documented disabilities should make arrangements to take the placement test through the Office of Disability Services (383-7583). New students must take the placement test PRIOR to advising. Testing is offered throughout the year; reservations can be made online or by calling the CAP Center 541.383.7200 or the Admissions Office at 541.383.7500.
COCC provides non-programmable handheld calculators for students taking the algebra tests; calculators are not permitted for the numerical skills test. For additional information about taking the ASSET test, sample questions, and understanding your scores, visit the CAP Center testing web site.
Students are exempt from taking the placement test if they:
1. Have completed an associate’s or higher degree
2. Have submitted transcripts to COCC from another college showing other writing and/or math courses.
3. Have submitted ASSET test scores from another college to COCC. Note: test must be no more than two years old.
4. Are taking only HD 110 (Career Planning), HD 190 (Latino Leadership), music performance, PE activity, studio art, computer skills or foreign language classes.
NOTE: Students taking the test for the Ability To Benefit requirement (those who do not have a high school degree or GED) for Federal Financial Aid eligibility, must pass all three tests in the same administration. Re-testing may occur only after 30 days, and students may not test more than two times in a 90-day period.
Step Three: Advising
Advising is required for FALL TERM for all new certificate/degree-seeking students; non certificate/degree-seeking students are not required to attend an advising session but are welcome to do so. See COCC's Advising website for helpful hints to get you started.
- New first-time freshman and transfer students with fewer than 30 transfer credits should make an appointment for New Student Advising which begins on July 9. You can make an appointment online or by calling Admissions (541.383.7500) or the CAP Center (541.383.7200).

Transfer students or students returning from an absence who have 30 or more college credits (from COCC or from another college), should contact the CAP Center (541.383.7200) for an advising appointment
Step Four: Registration
Fall term registration will be available beginning July 9 either online or in person at Boyle Education Center or the Redmond Campus, once steps 1 through 3 (as applicable) are complete and students have received instructor permission for the class (if required). See online login and registration directions. Fall term classes begin September 22, 2008.
Note: Before students can register for online classes offered by COCC, successful completion of the Orientation for Online Classes at COCC mini-course is required.

Tuition is due on the second Friday of the term for fall, winter and spring terms; on the second Monday for summer term. But, please don’t wait! Avoid long lines and pay before this deadline! Students may pay online via your online student account, drop a check or credit card information in the COCC drop box in Boyle Education Center, or pay in person at Boyle Education Center or the Redmond Campus.
Books, books and more books! Buy your books and other supplies at the Campus Bookstore or visit their online ordering system. You will need your class schedule to buy the appropriate books.
