COCC Quick Facts

Students must be 18 years old or have a high school diploma or GED (or will be receiving at the start of the first term). Application for admission is available through the Admissions Office and there is a $25 one time, non refundable application fee for new credit students. Upon admission, prospective students will receive a letter informing them of when they can register and any other needed registration steps. Counseling services, career services, academic advising and placement testing are all student services provided through the CAP Center. Counseling services provide free counseling sessions to COCC students enrolled in credit courses to address such issues as crisis intervention and assistance with life skills issues (i.e., communication skills, goal setting, time/stress management, student advocacy, and help in solving personal problems). Career services can help students develop a career plan and connect it to an educational path, as well as find and apply for jobs. Academic advising coordinates the advising process for all certificate- and degree-seeking students from their first experience at COCC through graduation. Students are assigned a personal advisor (either a professional advisor in the CAP Center or a faculty advisor in their program area). Placement in math, reading and writing courses is determined using the ASSET placement test. It is required of most students taking credit classes (see the schedule of classes for details) and is offered regularly through the CAP Center.

Certificate- or degree-seeking students need to apply for admission and pay the application fee, take a placement test, and attend new student advising (includes workshop and small group session with a faculty advisor) prior to registration. Students not seeking a certificate or a degree have the same preregistration requirements, but are not required to participate in the advising session. See the COCC class schedule, “Steps to Registration” for full details.

Financial aid forms are available from the Admissions Office, as well as at local area high school and colleges. Students are encouraged to apply online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/. Additional financial aid questions may be answered by contacting the Financial Aid office.

In the spring of 1962, a 140-acre tract of land on the west side of Awbrey Butte was donated for the purposes of establishing COCC's main campus. Two additional smaller purchases increased the new COCC campus to a total of 193 acres that face a spectacular view of Oregon's Cascade mountain range. Construction began in 1963, and the first three buildings – Ochoco, Modoc, and Deschutes – were completed by the spring of 1964. In 1965, Jefferson, Metolius and Grandview Student Union were constructed. The following two years saw completion of Juniper Residence Hall, Pinckney Center for the Performing Arts and the College's original library. Mazama and Ponderosa halls were built in 1971. Pioneer Hall was built in 1976. The Boyle Education Center opened in 1989. COCC’s Bookstore and Printing and Mail Services was built in 1993. In 1999, the current Library was completed, and Modoc Hall was also remodeled. All of the buildings, low in profile and scaled to the landscape, were situated to permit the preservation of trees and other natural features of Awbrey Butte. The campus’s newest building, Cascades Hall, which houses Oregon State University – Cascades Campus, opened in the fall of 2002.

Today, Central Oregon Community College's 201-acre Bend campus offers quiet, peaceful surroundings for study and reflection. The campus includes 21 buildings with a total of 414,212 square feet under roof. The 10,000-square-foot Chandler Lab is located on a six-acre site nearby on Awbrey Butte.

In addition, on the 25-acre Redmond Campus near the Redmond Airport, three buildings encompass 52,000 square feet: the Redmond College Center; the Redmond Workforce Connection, which offers convenience to residents looking for education and training opportunities; and the Manufacturing and Applied Technology Center (MATC).

General college information, box office tickets and student IDs are available in COCC's Information Office, located on the first floor of the Boyle Education Center. The Information Office is open most weekdays from 7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Hours can sometimes vary so please call (541) 383-7596 for current hours of operation.

Students are able to move seamlessly from COCC to OSU courses with the dual admission program. Enrollment is also possible with primary partners, Eastern Oregon University and University of Oregon, and there is collaboration with other Oregon universities. See COCC catalog for a list of current programs or visit the OSU-Cascades Campus Web site.

The ASSET placement test is required for all students taking credit classes. The goal of this test is to give students an idea of their current skill levels in reading, writing and math in order to select the most appropriate level of courses.  Placement testing takes about 2 ½ hours.

Students are exempt from taking the placement test if they:

• have completed an associate’s or higher degree;
• have submitted transcripts to COCC from another college showing other writing and/or math courses;
• have submitted ASSET test scores from another college to COCC (note: test must be no more than 2 years old); or
• are taking only music performance, PE activity, studio art, computer skills or foreign language classes.

In district

An individual who owns property, or who has maintained a permanent and continuous residence, in the District for one full year prior to the beginning of the first term of enrollment will be classified as an in-district resident. The COCC District consists of all of Deschutes, Crook and Jefferson counties, the northern portion of Klamath and Lake counties, and the Warm Springs Indian Reservation in Jefferson and Wasco Counties.

Out of district (in state)

An individual who has maintained a permanent and continuous residence in the state of Oregon but outside of the COCC district during the full year prior to the beginning of the first term of enrollment will be classified as “out of district.” The student’s residency will convert to in district two calendar years after the term in which the student began classes.

Out of state

An individual who has not maintained a permanent and continuous residence in the state of Oregon during the full year prior to the beginning of the first term of enrollment will be classified as “out of state.” The student’s residency will convert to in district two calendar years after the term in which the student began classes.

• Exemption – Per Oregon Administrative Rules, residents of bordering states: California, Idaho, Nevada and Washington will be charged in-state (out-of-district) tuition.
• Verification – Residency is determined from information provided on the student’s application. If there appears to be an inconsistency, the College may require additional information.
• Exception – International students are charged the out-of-state tuition rate for the duration of their education at COCC.

COCC offers a free on-campus shuttle service. Beginning at the corner of College Way and Newport Avenue, it transports passengers up the hill to the campus and circles the campus every 15 minutes, stopping at key campus locations. Click for campus shuttle schedule and map.

Bend Area Transit provides city wide bus service in Bend for a low cost. For route and fare information, visit the BAT web site.

Dial-A-Ride is a curb-to-curb, shared ride paratransit service providing rides to the disabled community.  Dial-A-Ride also provides service to low income seniors not living near a fixed Bend Area Transit (BAT) route.  To provide eligibility as disabled, low-income disabled, or low-income senior, you must submit the appropriate application or applications.  Dial-A-Ride is operated seven days a week and is closed on major holidays. Tuition:

• In-district: $66 per credit
• Out-of-district: $91 per credit
• Border states (WA, CA, ID, NV): $91 per credit
• Out-of-state: $186 per credit
• International: $186 per credit
• Audit: same as credit

(For purposes of tuition: 12+ credits per term is considered full-time attendance; 9 to 12 credits, 3/4 time; and 6 to 9 credits, half time.)

Fees:

• ASCOCC Student Services - $1.50 per credit up to a maximum of $18 per term. This fee covers student funding of ASCOCC/student government, the student newspaper, the student health/nursing center and other student-related services.
• Blue Sky Renewable Energy Fee - 25 cents per credit up to a maximum of $3.00 per term.
• Technology - $2 per credit up to a maximum of $20 per term.
• Mazama Activity - $16 per term for those students taking an HHP 185 activity class or for those wanting to use the gym
